Pixels Strike Back - 525,600 Minutes of Madness

Hot on the heels of Alex Tew’s Million Dollar Homepage, two brothers from London, England believe they have hit upon another novelty idea which will make theirs one of the hottest sites in 2006. Jason (36) and Gareth Edge (28), both web developers, have launched PixelLeague.com with a 7-day auction on eBay with the winner becoming the first ‘league entrant’.

Hot on the heels of Alex Tew’s Million Dollar Homepage, two brothers from London, England believe they have hit on another idea which will make theirs one of the hottest sites in 2006. Jason (36) and Gareth Edge (28), both web developers, have launched PixelLeague.com with a 7-day auction on eBay with the winner becoming the first ‘league entrant.’

A position in the league entitles an advertiser to display a 30 by 150 pixel image linked to their website. This image moves up and down the league based on its relative value. Advertisers buy their initial position by exchanging real money for points which the brothers have called ‘Pixons.’

“Tew’s Million Dollar Homepage (MDH) represents a snapshot which will remain static for at least five years now that all the one million pixels have been sold,” said Jason. “We wanted to create something which is more dynamic and allows people to jostle for position. Our site owes much to MDH, but has other influences such as eBay, ITV’s Who Wants to be a Millionaire, and even the Stock Market”.

Gareth explained, “We came up with the idea of weighting value in favour of those who enter the PixelLeague earlier. The initial exchange rate available to the winner of the eBay auction will buy 525,600 Pixons for every £1. Every minute after that, the exchange rate will fall by 1 Pixon, so that over time the cost of buying any given position in the league will increase. We were wondering what we should do to mark the end of our 525,600 minutes (12 months) when the the exchange rate has devalued to nothing … perhaps we could award a trophy or something!”

Advertisers will be able to buy more Pixons and improve their position at any time but only at the current exchange rate. A number of new features such as an integral trading system are planned to come online soon.

Jason continued, “There are so many things about the PixelLeague that excite us. Who will be the first to enter the league? What value will people place on being at the top? How will people use the trading facility to barter their position? Will anyone still be entering the league towards the end of the 525,600 minutes? Who will be at the top? Is it possible to repeat Tew’s success and make something out of nothing for a second time?”

Gareth said, “Having created some large and successful websites on behalf of others we decided it was time to put that knowledge to good use and do it for ourselves.”

If the Edge brothers are on the money with this idea, be prepared for the site’s strapline to enter everyday language over the coming 12 months:

“525,600 Minutes. Where will you be?”
