Papa Mike’s Guidebooks
In 1973 Tony and Maureen Wheeler formulated the first of Lonely Planet Guidebooks at a tiny kitchen table in their apartment. Starting out as somewhat of a backpacker’s bible, over the past thirty-some years, Mr. Wheeler and Lonely Planet has become the worlds largest independent travel publisher with over 650 titles in print and in 2005 sold over six million guidebooks. In 2001 Mike Hollywood published the first of his guidebooks on the West Indies’ Windward and Leeward Islands. Over the past five years, “Papa Mike” has sought out underdeveloped island locations that offer travelers the chance to visit a site prior to the arrival of mass tourism. The use of state of the art print on demand printing technology, allows Papa Mike’s guides to be produced in small quantities and focus on locations that are unfeasible to the mass-market guidebooks.
So to Tony Wheeler and the people at Lonely Planet, congratulations on your marketing and sales achievements, we at Papa Mike’s will continue to make our guides in a relaxed conversational tone, with a dose of humor, one at a time.
