Study: No. 1 Trait of Small Business Winners – Fame

Business Leaders Take Cue from Hollywood & Politics Reports Fame 101 Book

Vancouver, Washington (Vocus) January 20, 2010 –

Want to spot a high-trajectory company? Look for a high-visibility powerfully-branded leader. Branding & publicity experts report that most notable business leaders are as adept at publicity and personal branding as any Hollywood hero or rock star politician.

The new book Fame 101 identifies a mix of powerful personal branding and celebrity-level publicity as the common formula of America's super-successful, whether Sara Palin, Tyra Banks, or the owner of a hyper growth small business. The good news for Main Street's business people, says the book, is they can use this success recipe for themselves to dominate their own field.

"We're not talking about the Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan sort of fame; that's just supermarket aisle celebrity,” said Fame 101 author and branding expert Jay Jessup. "The fame we studied is simply very big and highly visible success in every area. We found there are Alpha Players in politics and entertainment as well as in less noticed areas like small business, chef'dom, and even gardening has its superstars.”

Jessup uses the examples of Microsoft's Bill Gates, Apple's Steven Jobs, and Amazon's Jeff Bezos as small business people who exploded past their competition to become the leading voices of their fields. "Although remarkable, Gates, Jobs, and Bezos were no smarter than 100 others; their business models were comparable to those of 1000 contemporaries. What made them all stand out was their use of personal branding and publicity to become 'The' guys.”

In the business arena we see that companies prosper when their leaders are visible and credible brands. These firms get the funding, the contracts, and attract employees seemingly effortlessly claims Fame 101.

"Listen to Jeff Bezos doing interviews,” said Jessup. "He's concise, articulate, and clearly has the sound of intelligence; and he does it all apparently off the top of his head. That's the result of speech training, media training, and developing talking points just like Barrack Obama preparing for his campaign. We all love Jeff and want to see him succeed. Since Amazon started publicists keep him, and Amazon's message, in the news. Can you name 1 Amazon competitor?”

Fame 101 uses 75 profiled notables including Rachel Ray, Billy Graham, the Olsen twins, Donald Trump, and others to demonstrate the common formula. For the next generation of notables it distills the success recipe into a step-by-step guide for winning fame.

"Want to see who's next?” asks Jay Jessup. "Just look at who is being profiled in the magazines, a visiting expert on the news, or a new author. They get the fame concept and will soon join Martha Stewart, the Dalai Lama, and America's best known contractor on the A list everywhere they go.”

For small business owners Fame 101 notes that the fame that used to take years and millions of dollars to develop, is now something anyone can capture using the Internet and some great messaging.
