The research process rules in strategic planning; “That’s when the discussion takes place”

In his presentation, Raimo Mansikkaoja, Vice President, Corporate Development at Nokian Tyres described their yearly planning cycle, and also a research study conducted in cooperation with Novintel. ”It is essential not to only focus on the outcome of a research process. Typically, when an in-depth report is done, there is little discussion about it afterwards. It is the process that counts: That’s when ideas and approaches are challenged, and new ones created”, Mansikkaoja says. He also stresses the importance of tight cooperation between the client and a vendor in highly strategic research projects: “Combining our own knowledge and effort of the client with the expertise of research professionals will lead to the best results.”

How to sense and capitalize on the trends that are constantly formulated around us?

Ilkka Koskimies, Marketing and Product Director at Martela, an office furniture manufacturer, had an interesting presentation about how working and the work itself are changing and how this affects the requirements from office furniture. Koskimies throws in the point of view of trend analysis: ”Systematically identifying and monitoring the trends that emerge and evolve around us is relatively demanding, but the real challenge is to turn the knowledge of certain trends into successful products and services that reflect these trends.”
