ABOUT THE PROGRAM

International Vaganova Summer School

Pasadena, CA – July 31 - August 19, 2006

The Vaganova Summer School is an intensive 3-week program designed for the committed dancer of an intermediate, advanced or pre-professional level. Admission to the program is by audition only. The program focuses on the perfection of all movements of classical dance. Study of technique, pointe, variations, character, pas-de-deux and the development of artistry and virtuosity are the basis of the Vaganova Summer School. Unlike most ballet intensives, students not only study Technique, but actually learn Classical and Character repertoire from ballets such as Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Le Corsaire, Don Quixote, The Nutcracker and others, in their original choreography. Emphasis is placed on the student's individuality and the development of their understanding of music and the performance of the role. Study also includes the history of Russian ballet and it's founders - Marius Petipa, Lev Ivanov, and Mikhail Fokine; the history of music, of composers such as Tchaikovski, Stravinski and Prokofiev; familiarity with theatrical designers such as Benoit, Bakst and Korovin; and great Russian dancers like Anna Pavlova, Vaslav Nijinksi and others.

Mansur’s mission is to preserve and pass on the legacy of Classical and Character Dance, unique and vanishing art forms that can only be kept alive through the passing on of this knowledge to dedicated dancers. With over sixty years of experience, Mansur is a lifeline from the origins of this art form to today’s passionate student.
