The Nellie Cashman Award, sponsored by Women Business Owners (WBO), is the most prestigious award for business women in the Puget Sound Region. Since 1982 this award, known as the “Nellie”, has recognized and honored women entrepreneurs who have made outstanding contributions to the status of women business owners through their leadership in business and the community. WBO is accepting nominations for the 2006 Nellie Award until April 21, 2006. Applications are available online at http://www.womenbusinessowners.org. The 25th Anniversary Awards Event will be held in October of 2006.

Nominees must be a current business owner with a business headquartered in Puget Sound. She must be primarily responsible for the financial performance of her business, have been in operation for at least five years, and own more than 50% of the equity in the business. Judging criteria include entrepreneurial spirit, ethics and community contribution, financial and management skills, and risk or difficulty of business. Past award recipients include Carolyn Frame, CFA Mortgage Professionals; Mimi Kirsch, Paradigm Communications Group; Karyn Rolstad, Karyn Rolstad Studios; and Judith Shulman, PHAROS Corporation.

Nellie Cashman, the award’s namesake, was a turn-of-the-century pioneer and entrepreneur. During the late 1800’s and early 1900’s she was a gold prospector, miner, restaurant owner, hotelier and grocery store proprietor. She was also a philanthropist, building numerous hospitals and churches, but is perhaps best known for leading a rescue mission to a remote mining site in British Columbia where her fellow miners were struck with scurvy. Confident and courageous, Nellie Cashman was an indomitable spirit who dared to dream and made those dreams come true.
