Bicentennial Bike Ride Celebrates Watkinsville's New Urbanist Planning in the Artland of Georgia

Oconee County Democrats host bicycle rides through Watkinsville to Bostwick or Winterville April 8, 2006. The desire to not use petroleum and planning of a community to include elements pedestrian and biker friendly will be highlighted among the small towns of Bishop, High Shoals, Bostwick or Winterville.

The Oconee County Democratic Committee welcomes bicycle riders of all ages and talent levels to participate in the Watkinsville Bicentennial Bike Ride 8:30 am Saturday, April 8th, 2006. The rain date is April 15th, 2006.

This second county government approved bike ride will offer opportunities of pedaling through the 200 year old city of Watkinsville to see some of the new working with the timeless elements of small town Americana here in the artland of Georgia. Destinations include Bishop, High Shoals, Bostwick or Winterville.

WATKINSVILLE BICENTENNIAL BIKE RIDE APRIL 8TH

When

The Watkinsville Bicentennial Bike Ride will take place Saturday, April 8, 2006 at 9 a.m. Rain date is April 15, 2006 at 9 a.m..

Where

The ride will leave from the back parking lot of the Oconee County Courthouse, 23 North Main Street, Watkinsville, Georgia.

Ride Description

Riders can choose from distance options of 22, 40, and 65 miles, or a five-mile fun ride. The routes will take riders along the rolling hills and rural countryside of Oconee, Walton, and Morgan counties Georgia. Ride through the historic towns of Bostwick, Rutledge and Bishop, or take a side trip to see Madison’s antebellum mansions.

The Watkinsville Bicentennial Bike Ride will be fully supported with SAG wagons, a professional mechanic, and refreshment stops along the way.

Registration

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. in the parking lot behind the Oconee County Courthouse. The cost is $20 for pre-registrants, $25 for same day registration. The first 40 registrants are guaranteed a “goodie bag.” Registration forms can be found at area bike shops. The deadline for pre-registration is April 3, 2006. You can also pre-register through Active.com.

Proceeds To Benefit

Proceeds to benefit the Oconee County Democratic Committee’s efforts to encourage developers and planners to designed our communities in ways that reduce our need to drive and our dependence on foreign oil, and returns them to the neighborhood and civic traditions of the past.

Enjoy Watkinsville

After the ride, participants are encouraged to walk Watkinsville’s Main Street, visit the historic Eagle Tavern, and peruse the antique shops and art galleries where local artists display their creations. The Watkinsville Bicentennial Bike Ride. Go fast, go slow, have fun!
