'Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow' is Favorite Book of Child on Showtime's 'The L Word': Book Shown in Season Finale Episode

Dialogue in season finale episode of Showtime series "The L Word" stated that child Angelika's "favorite book" was "Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow," and showed book onscreen. Book tells a sweet family story featuring an interracial family in the illustrations. The little girl on "The L Word" is biracial, the child of two women, one Caucasian, the other mixed-race (Jennifer Beals's character, Bette).

“Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow” by Los Angeles author Lisa Dunn-Dern is the favorite book of the baby on Showtime’s series “The L Word.” In the season finale episode, titled “Left Hand of the Goddess,” which aired the week of March 26 through April 1, when Tina (Laurel Holloman) and her boyfriend arrive home, they find the baby gone, taken away by Tina’s former partner, Bette (Jennifer Beals). A note left by the babysitter read, “Everything is fine with the little one. We read her favorite book until her other mother came for her.” The frame showed Tina’s boyfriend’s hand holding the note, next to a copy of the book “Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow.”

“Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow” is the story of one family’s sweet Saturday ritual. The dad cooks pancakes while mommy and little girl color. Then Mommy goes to the beauty salon. The little girl wants to give her daddy a new hairdo, too, but has a problem: the daddy is nearly bald. How she solves this dilemma (think play dough, garlic press, ribbons and beads) makes for a charming and beautifully illustrated story. The family depicted is interracial, with a biracial child. The baby in the Showtime series is biracial.

In conversation, Dunn-Dern discovered that "The L Word" creator-producer Ilene Chaiken loved Lisa's point of view addressing the issue of depicting a family with a biracial child in her children's book, since the Showtime series features families of all types in its characters and storylines, and the child on "The L Word" is also biracial.
