This Earth Day, discover “the 3R’s” – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle – with simple tips provided by the SEA Lab in honor of their free, 6th Annual Earth Day Festival, co-hosted with the City of Redondo Beach on Saturday, April 22.

“Small changes in every day actions can make a big difference, since everything we put on the ground across Los Angeles ends up washing into our ocean,” says Gian Centrulo, SEA Lab program director. “With these simple tips, everyone can really pitch in.”

  • Care for the sea and it will care for us – Marine life provides food and ingredients for an array of products, from ice cream to nail polish and much more. In essence, when we pollute the ocean – whether directly or indirectly, we are polluting our bodies. To learn more about uses of marine life in everyday products, visit the SEA Lab’s Ocean Supermarket Exhibit with free admission this Earth Day.
  • Put the “natives” to good use – Use native plants in landscaping. They are drought-resistant and survive longer, conserving both water and water bills. They can also help protect hillsides and other areas because native plants foster better stabilization and less erosion. Buy native plants and learn more about landscaping with them at the SEA Lab's Earth Day Festival.
  • Think “green” when cleaning around the home – Use biodegradable cleaning products around home because anything washed down a storm drain goes straight to the ocean, unfiltered. Go to self-wash car washes that use recycled water, and get a free pan to collect oil at the SEA Lab's Earth Day Festival.
  • Make rescuing a part of pet ownership – Before stocking an aquarium, ask where the animals come from. Buy those bred in captivity. When animals are taken from the wild, it disrupts the ocean's ecosystem, and many smuggled animals don’t survive. View rare, white sea horses from Viet Nam during tours of the SEA Lab’s rescued animal aquarium.

SEA Lab’s 6th Annual Earth Day Festival will be held on Saturday, April 22 from 11:00a.m. to 3:00p.m at the SEA Lab, located at 1021 N. Harbor Drive in Redondo Beach, CA 90277. Explore sea creatures that can be touched, participate in a sand sculpture contest, beach clean-up, earth-saving workshops and other earth-friendly-activities aimed at improving all our lives.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the SEA Lab is a community supported, hands-on coastal science education center that is a program of the Los Angeles Conservation Corps.
