Is "Take Our Children to Work Day" Obsolete?

DowntownWomensClub.com conducted a survey of 1000+ businesswomen to spot trends about networking and technology. The findings uncovered that Gen Y women have more working moms than Boomers, and more women say their mom is most like TV Mom Claire Huxtable.

Boston, MA (PRWEB) April 20, 2006 -- DowntownWomensClub.com (www.downtownwomensclub.com), a career website and social network for professional women on the go, conducted an online survey of 1,000+ businesswomen and found that from Boomers to Gen Ys most women had working mothers.

As the DowntownWomensClub.com survey found, 80% of today’s young (Gen Y) career women were raised by working mothers (please see accompanying visual of chart outlining generational breaking of women with working moms). This indicates that there may no longer be the need for a special day to demonstrate the career achievements and capabilities of women. Rather, our daughters and sons are inspired by working women every day.

Not surprisingly, the working mom role-model had an impact on pop culture. When asked which TV character most resembled their own mother, 40% selected a TV working mom. Claire Huxtable (25%), the successful lawyer and mom from “The Cosby Show,” was the most commonly referenced working mother character, followed by Murphy Brown (9%) and Rosanne (6%).

Which TV Character most resembles your mother?

1.    Claire Huxtable (Cosby Show) 25%

2.    Carol Brady (The Brady Bunch) 18%

3.    June Cleaver (Leave it to Beaver)15%

4.    Murphy Brown (Murphy Brown)9%

5.    Rosanne (Roseanne)6%

6.    Bree Van De Kamp (Desperate Housewives)    3%

7.    The women of Absolutely Fabulous 2%
