BOULDER, Colorado (PRWEB) May 4, 2006 -- AlphaSniffer, LLC announced today that NSF has awarded the company SBIR Phase One Grant: “A Novel Optical Biosensor for Rapid Clinical Diagnostics." Principal Investigator Dr. Bilge Hacioglu.
The grant, in the amount of $100,000, will allow AlphaSniffer to adapt its ongoing development programs in high performance detection technology to the specific needs of the Medical community.
AlphaSniffer’s work under this grant is expected to require approximately six months. AlphaSniffer expects to also apply for follow-on Phase Two SBIR funding from NSF to move this technology into commercial applications.
Background: Dr. Misha Plam, veteran Boulder entrepreneur, founded AlphaSniffer in 2003 to develop new technologies for real-time detection of trace contaminants, toxins and other molecules. Applications include real-time detection instruments for the defense, military and homeland security markets, as well as instruments useful in the pharmaceutical, chemical and food processing industries, biochemical research and commercial and residential building markets. In 2004, AlphaSniffer raised $1,500,000 from private investors.
Dr. Plam previously founded and was CEO of Sievers Instruments, which was sold to Ionics (NYSE: ION) in 1996. In 2004, Ionics was sold to General Electric.
Prof. John “Jan” Hall, member of the AlphaSniffer Scientific Advisory Board, recently was awarded Nobel Prize in physics.
