The National Weather Service updates are (based on data gathered at the Johnstown airport). Our data is based on downtown Johnstown weather conditions, which the Temperature varies by as much as ten degrees between the airport and where our weather station is located. The weather station is powered by a professional wired Lacrosse weather center and includes the following sensors: Thermo-hygro transmitter, Wind sensor, and Rain sensor running Weather Display software and Weather Display Live. We will be adding MesoMap Live and much more. This station is part of the SkyWarn Spotter program it is a voluntary program in which the pubic can participate and interact with your local NWS Office. Skywarn spotters are encouraged to relay critical weather information to their local NWS Office, in support of the Warning and Forecast Operations. The information they provide routinely helps the NWS Forecasters make better/more informed forecasts, and helps them to warn others of impending dangers or hazards. Western Pa Weather has plans to also get other areas online in the Western Pa Area in the future. They are also looking to start a volunteer service in the Johnstown Area: GJST What is GJST? (Greater Johnstown Skywarn Trackers) GJST is a group that will be forming soon, the purpose is to track and report severe weather directly to the National Weather Service located in State College. Our plans are to provide emergency on-scene assistance to fire, EMS, and police. Why does GJST exist? When GJST is formed it will work with the NWS and Local and State Governments in order to protect lives and property from severe weather. We will be set up to provide municipal public safety with search & rescue technicians and EMS first responders. What does GJST do? A: GJST will send trained SKYWARN Spotters into the field when we are activated. The spotters relay the first hand weather conditions back to our dispatcher. If the severity of the weather warrants, Dispatch will then relay that information to the NWS and local authorities. In turn they will issue warnings to the local area. We also will set up a command on the scene of an emergency in the absence of Fire & EMS, handing over command when they arrive. GJST's other services will included providing traffic control, support staff, and even Community Emergency Response Team Instructors to local jurisdictions. What is SKYWARN? The NWS trains people to assist them in saving lives and property. This training of how severe weather acts, looks, and the threat it carries is called SKYWARN. In basic it teaches a spotter how to do what they do. How could I become a spotter? If you are interested, GJST would be glad to talk to you about becoming a member when we start. If that is not possible visit our links page to the NWS and look up SKYWARN. How do I join GJST? If you live in Western Pennsylvania around the Johnstown area and would like to become a member once we start up send an E-Mail to skywarn@westernpaweather.com. # # #
