New Film Adaptation of “Johnny Got His Gun” Starring Ben McKenzie Offered Free to All U.S. High Schools

Educational budget cuts forecast for over 29 states spurs Hollywood production company to offer a new film version of Dalton Trumbo’s classic anti-war novel “Johnny Got His Gun” free of charge to every high school library in the country.

With ticket prices at movie theaters going up and school district budgets going down, one Hollywood film company has found a unique way to get its movie in front of student audiences, give it away!

Greenwood Hill Productions has launched an innovative new film distribution initiative, offering the educational DVD version of its movie “Dalton Trumbo’s Johnny Got His Gun” starring Ben McKenzie (“Southland”, “The O.C.”) to high school libraries across the U.S. free of charge. Teachers, librarians, and school administrators who request the film for use at their school will receive a free copy of the educational video, which includes public performance rights, allowing educators to legally show the film in classrooms, free of charge, for the lifetime of the DVD. Costs for educational and institutional videos traditionally run in the hundreds of dollars.

“Trumbo’s original 1939 novel has been a part of the curriculum at many high schools for decades,” said the film’s director, Rowan Joseph. “Thousands of students read it each year. While I was honored to have the movie released in theaters, it was always conceived as an educational video.”

Ben McKenzie, who stars in the TNT series “Southland”, received critical acclaim for his one-man performance in the film, which was released through Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner’s theatrical distribution company, Truly Indie.

McKenzie said about the new initiative, “The movie was a labor of love for everyone involved. I think it’s great that like the book, it will now be available for viewing and thoughtful discussion by students for years to come.”

A portion of the film’s proceeds are being donated to the Fallen Patriot Fund, a non-profit organization established to help families of U.S. military personnel who were killed or seriously injured in Iraq.
