"The Ice, The Sea, The Calm" Photographic Exhibition at The Forum in Greenwich by Stephen Palmer This photographic exhibition on at the Forum at Greenwich from 1st June to 30th June reflects the artist’s continuing obsession with seascapes. Professor Stephen Palmer, an Honorary Professor of Psychology at City University, often spends many hours in front of a computer writing academic and self-help books. His favourite place to write is the harbour village of Porthleven in Cornwall where he has an ever changing view of the sea from his studio. He will glance from his laptop to the view and back again. The sea, the mist, the calm waves, the choppy waves, the surf, the sand, the rocks, the whiteness, the beach, the sunrise, the sunset, all hold a certain fascination for him and are indelibly etched on his memory. This current exhibition concentrates on seascapes in Porthleven and Camber Sands, England and contrasts these with Svalbard icescapes in the Arctic Circle photographed whilst he was living on an ice breaker, The Polar Star, midsummer, 2005. His Travel Logbook of his Arctic trip is also available to read at this exhibition. Professor Stephen Palmer said, “I experience a state of mindfulness when painting seascapes or taking photos. I’m literally here in the present moment, instead of being elsewhere, such as thinking about work, have I paid my Council Tax or whatever.” “The Arctic is awe inspiring, even sublime. The blue ice is florescent and the many glaciers are overwhelming in their size. And then you meet, in person, the polar bears and walruses. But for how long? As the Arctic ice melts due to global warming, the natural habit of the polar bears and walruses will just disappear by the end of this century.” “In the exhibition, I’ve contrasted The Arctic photos with photos of seascapes from Camber Sands and also the small harbour village of Porthleven in Cornwall. As the sea level rises, even Camber Sands and Porthleven may be radically different by the end of this century. I’ve even contrasted two warning signs that form are part of the sea- and icescapes” Professor Stephen Palmer BA PhD Stephen Palmer studied psychology, biology, art and environment with the Open University as a mature student. He found the art and environment course the most stimulating and rewarding part of his degree. His favourite painting medium is oils on canvas. Most of his paintings and photographs are of seascapes and his paintings have gradually become more abstract using fewer colours. His recent trip on an icebreaker to the Arctic gave him the opportunity to take literally thousands of photographs of the awe inspiring views of glaciers and the wildlife. He has authored or edited over 30 books on a range of topics. Equipment Digital Camera, FinePix A405; HP Design Jet 5000 processor.
