PRESS CONFERENCE: OKLAHOMA BOMBING VICTIMS' FAMILIES SEEK PRESIDENTIAL SUPPORT FOR INCLUSION IN VICTIMS COMPENSATION ACT. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
On Thursday, May 30, 2002, the group, Fairness for OKC, will be gathering in the First Amendment area at the Oklahoma City National Memorial at 1:00 PM for a press conference which will start at 2:00 pm CST. Fairness for OKC is a group of Victims' Families and Survivors (over 100 and growing daily) from the Oklahoma City Terrorist bombing of the AP Murrah Federal building.
Representing the families and survivors are the prominent attorneys/lobbyists, Mr. Charles E. Polk, Jr., of Washington, D.C., and Mr. Douglas Dowd from St. Louis, MO. In a bipartisan effort, Messrs. Polk and Dowd have been representing the victims of the OKC Bombing in an attempt to provide fair treatment and equal compensation to all victims of terrorism (Oklahoma City and New York City).
Senators Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Don Nickles (R-OK) announced on Thursday, May 23 that they would draft the initial legislation that would seek to include Oklahoma victims. This legislation is a bipartisan effort to help the Oklahoma victims' families and survivors of the bombings of the AP Murrah building in 1995 and the victims of the 1993 WTC bombing. This effort is supported by leaders of both the House and Senate. In the House our own Chairman J.C. Watts and Minority Leader Richard Gephardt (D-MO) are taking leadership roles in support of our efforts. We have also received a great deal of support and encouragement from our Governor Frank Keating.
Fairness for OKC is seeking both public and Presidential support in signing into law legislation that would allow families of the OKC bombing to receive fair and equal compensation for their losses similar to what was given to the victims of September 11th.
President Bush announced last Friday that he would not support this legislation. Under the US Constitution's guarantee of Equal protection, Oklahoma victims should receive similar compensation to that of the September 11th terrorist victims. Terrorism is terrorism and fair is fair. Rather than taking legal action to secure this Constitutional right, Fairness for OKC believes this should be handled administratively.
At this conference Fairness For OKC seeks to educate and inform the public and the President of why they feel that they should receive equal treatment.
