Statement of Need:

Schizophrenia can be a severe mental illness characterized by a decline of the patient’s functioning and relationship with the outside world. Schizophrenia has a lifetime prevalence of about 1–1.5%, and care for patients with schizophrenia consumes a larger than expected portion of healthcare costs and social services. Therefore, the potential for recovery is an important element of the treatment course. The recovery movement is often thought of in the rehabilitation setting, psychosocial setting, and advocacy groups and less frequently in terms of medications used to treat chronic disease. However, when discussing patients with schizophrenia, recovery refers to a process or journey to learn "a new way of living a satisfying, hopeful, and contributing life even with the limitations caused by illness." Factors influencing recovery include an initial and early response to a single medication as well as adherence to treatment, which is often compromised by undesirable side effects. In Part 1 of this evidence-based CME Outfitters/psychCME TV activity, clinicians will learn to design more effective courses of schizophrenia treatment that incorporate targeted pharmacotherapy as a key component of the recovery process.
