In an effort to address the shortfall of English language instruction services for recent immigrants to Canada, The Linguist (http://www.thelinguist.com ), a B.C. based system for online English learning has teamed up with the Surrey-North Delta Rotary Club to provide free English for immigrants.

As reported by the Globe and Mail on June 2, immigrants to Canada often have to wait months to start English classes. What is more, government supported English classes are mostly limited to the most basic levels of English. Poor language and cultural skills cost the immigrants and the society at large a great deal of money.

Surrey and North Delta have seen immigrants from a variety of sources settle in their communities in recent years, including the immigrants from Sudan, featured in a recent Globe and Mail article. The Surrey North Delta Rotary Club members want to help these newcomers to their community. That is why they have teamed with The Linguist to offer a unique service.

Steve Kaufmann, who speaks ten languages, is the founder of The Linguist. He knows that real language progress does not take place in a classroom. Instead it is mostly through intensive and systematic exposure to the interesting and relevant language content that people learn. The local Rotary members can offer the content, and The Linguist can offer the technology that enables people to improve their English from this content.

A special joint website has been created where immigrants will find a range of content to learn from. This includes some easy content for beginners as well as in depth interviews conducted with Rotary members describing their professional careers and their activities in Rotary. This content will give immigrants a perspective on the lives of their new fellow citizens and help them improve their English.

This content comes alive as an English learning resource because of The Linguist’s unique language learning engine. All content is in audio and electronic text format. Learners can download the content for repetitive listening. They read the texts and look up the meaning of words they do not know using an online dictionary. They save new words and phrases to a personal database and thereby take advantage of The Linguist’s unique learning methodology to really acquire these words and phrases.

This partnership is a new initiative for The Linguist, and one which will be repeated with other partners. Visit the Rotary English Club at the following URL: http://www.thelinguist.com/rotaryclub.
