When a Loved One Can no Longer Live at Home - - -What Then?

New book helps caregivers find trustworthy eldercare and avoid long term care properties that abuse and neglect elders. Book contains 16 worksheets and checklists, four appendices, index.

The problem of finding trustworthy long-term care, already critical, can only worsen as the number of elders expands. Phyllis Staff experienced this problem when she tried to find quality care for her father, a victim of Alzheimers disease.

Finding little objective information that could help her distinguish properties that provided good care from those likely to abuse and neglect, Dr. Staff tackled the problem herself. As an experimental psychologist with a career spanning almost 30 years, shed diagnosed and solved organizational problems for some of the largest educational and Fortune 500 concerns. She drew on those same skills to build a 400-item protocol. This protocol was then used to rate more than 120 long-term care properties. Based on statistical analysis of those ratings, she developed a reliable method for finding quality care and avoiding properties that abuse and neglect residents.

How to Find Great Senior Housing: A Roadmap for Elders and Those Who Love Them presents a simplified version of her method. The most important predictors appear in boxed text so they are not overlooked. Sixteen worksheets and checklists, found at the ends of most chapters, lead caregivers through their search, ensuring that no critical questions remain unanswered. Four appendices list contact information helpful to caregivers during their search for care and afterward.
