European Union is Not Actually Opposed to Genetic Engineering

The article argues that contrary to popular opinion, the European Union is not opposed to genetic modification.

In his latest blog, blogger Kameswara Rao argues that contrary to popular view, the European Union (EU) is not opposed to genetic engineering.

To support this argument, Dr. Rao notes that for the last three years, the European Commission (EC) has approved over 190 genetically engineered (GE) crops for field testing. In Spain 98 crops, have been approved for field trials.

The other approvals are as follows: France (19), Germany (10), Hungary (7), Portugal (5), Sweden (4), Czech Republic (3), Poland (3), Denmark (2) and Ireland (1).

“Both public institutions and biotech corporations are involved in developing these transgenic crops,” notes Dr. Rao.

The approved crops have traits which include herbicide and pesticide tolerance, high enzyme levels, high yield, photosynthetic efficiency and explosive detection.

The crops range from transgenic corn, potato, rye, rapeseed, cotton, tobacco, flax and sugar beet.
