Bosque Boy Alive

“I fantasized as a kid,” says Jimmy Mason, “about living in the wild, like Tarzan and Bomba the Jungle Boy…even ran away from home once in pursuit of those dreams. Now, as an adult, I spend a lot of time hiking throughout the Río Grande bosque and wonder what it would be like for a boy trying to survive there. The bosque is an exciting but somewhat dangerous place. Within a few hundred yards of the Central Avenue Bridge, you may encounter coyotes, great blue herons, and bald eagles, as well as hidden campsites of human inhabitants.”

“As I wrote this story,” Jimmy continues, “I had no plan as to where it would lead. Each day I picked up where I left off and tried to write for an hour or so. I let the story itself guide me to its eventual ending. It was an adventure for me as much as it was for the boy. I was able to live once again, at least for an hour a day, in that exciting, though often confusing world of childhood.”
