Medical Writer Rita Buckley Wins Awards for Excellence in Medical Communication

American Medical Writers Association Recognizes Buckley/Swartz

The American Medical Writers Association named medical writer, Rita Buckley, Writer/Owner of medical writing firm Buckley/Swartz, a recipient of two Will Solimene Awards for Excellence in Medical Communication. She received the awards for The Lehman Series Expert Panel on Weight Loss Surgery, published in the journal Obesity in 2009, and What to do About High Cholesterol, a special health report published by Harvard Health Publications, Harvard Medical School.    

The awards, presented at an annual banquet at the Westin Hotel in Waltham, Massachusetts, recognize members of the American Medical Writers Association for outstanding work in medical affairs, biomedical, and health communication. Selection is based on accuracy of content, quality, originality, achievement of purpose, and overall impact. The Will Solimene Award for Excellence in Medical Communication has been presented annually since 1991.

According to Jill Shuman, the group’s treasurer and this year’s Awards Chair, the awards have an impact that goes beyond kudos for the writers who produced the work. “The Will Solimene Award recognizes outstanding quality in medical writing,” she said, “but even more importantly, award-winning work sets the standard for excellence in the field medical affairs. This is something that benefits the public and the research and medical communities alike.”

The awards ceremony, held on June 10, 2010, featured a five-course dinner. The keynote speaker was Dr. Harris Berman, the Interim Dean of Tufts University School of Medicine and a pioneer in managed care quality and reform.
