Top Stem Cell Research Laboratories Revealed

Ion Channel Media Group has released a list of the top stem cell research laboratories. The list was compiled based upon the publication history and citation rate of every stem cell research laboratory in the world. Irving Weissman's lab at Stanford gained top honours, with the laboratories of Catherine Verfaillie, Rudolf Jaenisch, Makio Ogawa and Hal Broxmeyer rounding out the top 5.

The ranking was compiled using the publication and citation history of nearly 5000 stem cell research labs worldwide. Irving Weissman's lab at Stanford garnered the highest honours based largely on his influential work with haematopoietic stem cells and the role of signalling in regulating their growth. Catherine Verfaillie's laboratory at the University of Minnesota earned the number two spot based upon her work with stem cells derived from bone marrow. Most of the laboratories in the top 25 are from the United States, despite the strict regulations placed upon stem cell research by the US government.

Laboratories in Japan, Germany, France and the United Kingdom also occupy many of the top spots due partly to their govenement's more lenient rules regarding stem cell research.
