Meth Prevention Toolkit Aims to Help Communities Fight Back

As a front-line state battling the methamphetamine problem, Oregon has learned valuable lessons in the fight against this highly addictive drug.

Portland, OR (PRWEB) August 26, 2006 -- As a front-line state battling the methamphetamine problem, Oregon has learned valuable lessons in the fight against this highly addictive drug.

Oregon Partnership, an organization that provides a unique combination of drug prevention education programs and treatment referral, has emerged as a leader in this effort, developing a powerful methamphetamine prevention (www.orpartnership.org/web/tacklingmeth.asp) toolkit that helps communities mobilize against meth.

"Tackling Meth: Helping you reduce drug use in your community" contains a comprehensive and user friendly PowerPoint library that can be customized for various audiences. The PowerPoint features information about meth's broad impacts, detecting a meth lab, applicable meth laws (http://www.orpartnership.org/web/educationtool.asp) and other vital information.

"Tackling Meth" also contains a Community Action Guide (http://www.orpartnership.org/web/actionguide.asp) with practical information about how to mobilize communities to prevent and stop meth manufacture, trafficking and use. In addition, it includes information to help families and businesses address substance abuse, and to help communities engage the media to raise awareness about meth issues.

"Meth is a devastating drug, but armed with information and proven strategies for action, people can feel empowered to develop solutions that will have a positive impact in their community," said Judy Cushing, president and CEO of Oregon Partnership. "The toolkit is designed to help coalitions, business leaders, faith-based organizations, parent groups, schools, law enforcement, health care professionals, civic groups and other community leaders do just that."

Although "Tackling Meth" focuses on the meth issue, the strategies featured in the toolkit can be applied to other drug issues a community may face.

Oregon Partnership is a nonprofit that has worked to promote healthy kids and communities for well over a decade by raising awareness about drug issues and helping broad-based groups develop public policies that improve community livability.
