'K.A.S.H is King' Program Teaches Kids Higher Thinking through Chess Students Succeed Using Complex Thinking Skills Learned Through Chess. (PRWEB) September 16, 2006 -- Be Someone, Inc., founder Orrin C. Hudson, Chess champion, achievement expert and motivational master just released a 20 year project his book One Move At A Time! How to Win At Chess and Life…
“There is a crisis in American education today, and our future is at stake” says Orrin C. Hudson, founder of Be Someone, Inc., an Atlanta-based nonprofit that promotes academic achievement and educational attainment among at-risk kids.
Educators today face tough choices as growing demands compete for scarce resources. Limited funds, increasing expenses and class sizes, and the requirements imposed by federal legislation combine to challenge even the most experienced of educators. In this environment, preparation for standardized tests assume greater priority than the development of cognitive skills. As a result, our children are learning how to take tests and memorize facts, often at the expense of acquiring the cognitive skills that are necessary for learning and problem-solving.
Using numerous tools, including the game of chess, Be Someone teaches kids problem-solving strategies, concentration, patience, and responsibility, builds character and self-esteem, and generates hope and confidence. Since its founding in 2001, Be Someone has taught more than 16,000 kids in eight states the meaning of making every move count.
A chess champion, U.S. Air Force veteran, and former Alabama State Trooper and entrepreneur, Hudson points to his own life as proof that every move counts. After winning two chess championships (having been considered the lowest seed both times), Hudson recognized that chess provides a structured way of learning and helps to develop skills, such as patience, concentration, the ability to solve problems, and the ability to follow rules. It also teaches responsibility, as it illustrates that all actions have consequences. And, lastly, it teaches that winning isn’t everything; sometimes losing can be a valuable instrument for improvement.
Based on the belief that success in chess and success in life require the same fundamentals, Be Someone teaches kids the practical skills and techniques to overcome obstacles in life, illustrated through the best and most intellectual visual aid: the chessboard. Reports from teachers and parents confirm the program’s success. Results include increased classroom participation, grade point averages, and attendance, along with improved concentration, problem-solving skills, and behavior.
Hudson, who has just released his third book (“One Move at a Time: How to Win in Chess and Life”), describes a new currency of success . He predicts that his “K . A . S . H . is KING!” program, which stands for Knowledge, Attitude, Skills, and Habits, will take the nation by storm.
Hudson is planning a nationwide tour to major cities, bringing his “K . A . S . H . is KING!” concept to churches, community centers, schools, and any venue that will open its doors to help improve the lives of children. Says Hudson , “We need everyone’s help! We want to partner with parents, children, civic centers, and corporations. Our goal is to improve the decision-making skills and self-esteem of children so that they can be winners for a lifetime.”
