New York City, NY (PRWEB) September 18, 2006 -- The Hamilton Fish Park Branch of the New York Public Library is delighted to host If You Can Find Me, an exhibit of words and images on identity.
Reflecting a wide array of approaches to the theme of identity, the works here range from comic-inspired characters created by first graders in PS 180’s Say Yes to Education Program to self-portraits fashioned by legendary LES artists.
A particular highlight of the exhibit is an installation of Emily Molligan’s photos of incoming Marta Valle Secondary School students. Arranged in a grid, they are complemented by student poems, along with playfully patterned identity collages conceived and created by Marta Valle students in collaboration with their New York University mentors.
Other standouts include: Taijay’s meticulously crafted designs fusing Eastern and Western identities; Elliot Bassman’s vibrant mythical mural – illuminating identity thru its multifaceted meaning and imagery; Zito’s expressionistic self-portrait executed on found materials; and Denise Carbonell’s elegant blend of text and paint on discarded wood.
Among those established graffiti artists who express and promote their identity through urban calligraphy consisting of letters and figures in waving curves, rhythms and lines are Chris Cortes, Jayra, Meres, and Aaron Lazansky-Oliva aka Spaze Crafte One.
Other artists whose works are featured in this exhibit include: Mike Cavallaro, Danny Kimanyen, Mildred Kaufman Lang, Mike Rimbaud and Brad Silverman.
Crossing cultures, backgrounds and generations, the photos, prints, collages, murals, comic art, graffiti, paintings, drawings and poems on exhibit invite visitors to further discover and explore themselves and others.
If You Can Find Me will remain on exhibit through November 1st.
An artist reception and opening for If You Can Find Me will be held in the Community Room of the Hamilton Fish Park Branch on September 21st between 4-6pm.
The Hamilton Fish Park Branch is located at 415 E. Houston Street, between Columbia and Pitt Streets. Library hours are: Monday and Wednesday – 10-6; Thursday – 12-7; Friday – 1-6 and Saturday 10-5.
