Crisis or Solution - Preparing for Workforce 2020 on Long Island

Nielsen Associates addresses Long Island businesses regarding the next generation workforce.

Hauppauge, NY (PRWEB) October 5, 2006 -- While 99% of all executive and 74% of all management positions are currently held by the “Boomer” generation, these Boomers will soon need to pass the torch. But, the “Boomers” may not quite be prepared when it comes to understanding the differences between the generations X and Y – those they are hiring now and in the near future. Nielsen Associates, an executive search firm specializing in talent acquisition, is aware that businesses on LI must prepare for this inevitable shift in workforce demographics. A clear understanding of how businesses should develop and prepare is extremely important as we reach the year 2020 when “Boomers” will no longer be part of the active workforce as the next generations replace them.

“We are already beginning to see signs of this workforce shift with our aging workforce and lack of incentives to keep the generations X and Y on Long Island,” explained Renee’ Nielsen, President, Nielsen Associates. Measures must be taken beyond current benefits, fair compensation and friendly co-workers--typical retention strategies. It takes creative thinking and a sharp approach to equate business expectations with the expectations of generations X and Y. “ We will be unprepared if businesses don’t recognize the implication of our changing workforce and implement programs to motivate and retain their current employees as well as to attract and retain the upcoming future workforce.”

Nielsen Associates is encouraging businesses to consider a variety of 21st century approaches. Renee’ continues, “Future-thinking employers are now implementing and offering programs that allow ‘job-sharing’ for certain functions to the current and next generation employees. These programs allow employees to contribute their unique talent and expertise to the organization while maintaining the work/life balance they desire.”

There are many more ways to prepare. However, Long Island businesses will have to begin looking at how different generations think—what they will look for in their overall work/life experience compared to the prior generation. They will have to find more ways to attract this upcoming workforce and to entice them to stay and help to grow their businesses here.

Nielsen Associates is committed to creating awareness of this workforce issue on Long Island and will be covering this topic in greater depth in its presentation at the HIA (Hauppauge Industrial Association) Workforce Management Symposium and also at the upcoming dinner meeting of SHRM (Society for Human Resources Management) in Smithtown, Long Island, NY on October 25th.
