Maryville, TN (PRWEB) October 16, 2006 -- Academic psychologist, therapist, activist, and prodigal daughter of a Presbyterian minister, Dr. Susan K. Fuhr brings her first book back from the Left Coast (Portland, Oregon) to East Tennessee, her childhood home. At the Blount County Library, she shares the personal journey that began with family tragedy in Maryville in 1967 and found its way to the writing of this nonfiction work. Dr. Fuhr brings psychology, cognitive neuroscience, philosophy, spirituality, and other threads together to offer readers ten keys to discovering and appreciating their authentic selves.
"Maryville, Tennessee, has been a place of many life-changing events for me," says Susan K. Fuhr, Ph.D., the daughter of Reverend Dr. Tom Fuhr. As she lived in other places and traveled through many life changes, she sought personal inner harmony. On Monday, October 23, at 7:00 p.m., Dr. Susan Fuhr will share a brief reading from her book, "The Ten Invitations: Journeys to Your Self," as well as sharing the personal journey that began with family tragedy in Maryville in 1967 and found its way to the writing of this nonfiction work. An academic psychologist and psychotherapist, Susan Fuhr brings psychology, cognitive neuroscience, philosophy, spirituality, and other threads together to offer readers ten keys to discovering and appreciating their authentic selves.
Her father, Reverend Fuhr, who passed away in April, 2005, was a Presbyterian minister who served many area churches across nearly 30 years and was also Dean of Students at Maryville College in the mid 1960s. Susan, a Heritage High School salutatorian, left East Tennessee in 1983 and returned this fall to teach as an adjunct at Maryville College (where she was a freshman) and to share her recently published book. While her father was not able to read the entire book, he reviewed early drafts and enthusiastically supported her work, and texts from his personal library were important resources for the author's research.
About Fuhr's book, Bob Czimbal, Portland, OR, author of "Kindred Spirits," writes, "A delightful blend of wit and science. A reminder that our existence is a miracle."
"The author speaks to the reader in a conversational tone, yet at the same time challenges the reader intellectually...how our brain works, how we relate to ourselves and others, how we perceive God and the rest of the world... What a pleasure to read chapters that raise questions and provide intriguing information," says Stephanie Ward of Boise, Idaho.
Dr. Susan, as her students nicknamed her, received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Florida State University and was on the faculty for five years at Weber State University in Utah. There she taught a wide range of psychology courses, conducted research with students, and worked with clients. After a foray into corporate America she returned to her original passions of teaching and therapy, moving to Portland, Oregon, on September 11, 2001. Most recently, she returned to her childhood home in East Tennessee, accepting an adjunct teaching position at Maryville College and looking for ways to build bridges between Blue and Red States.
