Panama Expert Looks at the Future of the Canal

Former Panama Canal Commission Chairman Robert McMillan explores the history and the strategic importance of the Panama Canal in Global Passage

Garden City, New York (PRWEB) October 26, 2006 -- The Panama Canal is about to be enlarged and in Global Passage--Transformation of Panama and the Panama Canal, insider Robert McMillan explains the ramifications and controversy surrounding the project, as well as the fascinating history of the country of Panama.

On April 24, 2006, Panamanian president Martin Torrijos announced that the Panama Canal would be enlarged. What does this mean for Panama—and for the world? In clear, lucid prose, former Panama Canal Commission Chairman Robert McMillan details Panama’s fascinating history, his own involvement in Panama and the canal, and the ramifications for the future. He includes the controversies, too, including resentments over America’s transference of the canal to Panama and worries about China’s involvement in the enlargement project.

This is a crucially important book for anyone interested in the threat of China, terrorism, global economy and the politics of a great canal. Endorsed by Gilberto Guardia, the first Panamanian administrator of the canal, and Juan Sosa, the former Panamanian ambassador to the U.S., Global Passage--Transformation of Panama and the Panama Canal’s publication coincides with the approval of a $5.25 billion canal enlargement project.

“Bob McMillan makes a significant contribution with his insightful chronology of events and personal experiences surrounding Operation Just Cause, the canal transition and U.S.-Panamanian relations. I thoroughly enjoyed it.” --Former Congressman and U.S. Ambassador to Panama, William J. Hughes
