One Man's Garbage is Another Man's Vintage

San Francisco Marriott hotel participates in full-circle composting program.

San Francisco, CA (PRWeb) November 17, 2006 -- From the hotel's subterranean compactor to the sun-kissed vineyards of Napa and Sonoma to the elegant tables of the hotel's lounges, the San Francisco Marriott is helping to complete the recycling loop by offering a one-of-a-kind "trashy wine" list in its View Lounge and Atrium Bar. The San Francisco luxury hotel uses its food scraps as a resource, and a way for city people to contribute to environmentalism by returning nutrients to farms and vineyards.

The San Francisco hotel initiated its award-winning compost program in 2003 and currently collects and compacts over a half-million pounds of its food scraps a year, enough to fill the hotel's giant lobby from floor to ceiling. The compacted scraps are taken to Jepson Prairie Organics, a modern compost facility, where they are converted to nutrient-rich soil amendment called Four Course Compost. Working with local vintners who use the enriched soil for growing the ideal grape, the luxury hotel in San Francisco has assembled a selection of premium wines at reasonable prices for guests who have an altruistic passion for the environment or anyone who enjoys a nice robust red or a crisp white wine.

"This is a fun and functional approach for our guests to experience excellent wines, support regional vineyards and help the environment by completing the recycling circle," said David Behar, director of food and beverage at the hotel. "Marriott has a long-standing commitment to the environment, and this is a unique way to include our guests."

Select labels are available at the View Lounge on the 39th floor and Atrium Bar and include Luna Pinot Grigio, Bouchaine Chardonnay, Saintsbury Pinot Noir, Field Stone Merlot, and B.R. Cohn Silver Label Cabernet. Pricing is $9-$14 by the glass and $36-$72 by the bottle. A flight of red wine is available for $16.

Local recycling companies voted the San Francisco Marriott the Commercial Recycler of the Year in 2006, in their local publication, Recycle Today.

The hotel is conveniently located near cable cars, museums and world-class restaurants for your enjoyment. Located in the heart of downtown, across the street from the Moscone Center and minutes from Union Square, the San Francisco Marriott Hotel provides the quintessential San Francisco hotel accommodations for your business, leisure and meeting needs. Its downtown location boasts comfortable guest rooms, an array of downtown San Francisco restaurants, an indoor pool with whirlpool, 100,000 sq. ft. of meeting space, and award-winning service.
