HomeNYC Creates Fantasy World "in the Snow" for IZOD Mike Kelly, Executive Vice President of Marketing for Phillips-Van Heusen, IZOD's parent company, teams with HomeNYC Creative Director, Ben Orisich to create an IZOD fantasy world theatrical commercial to generate awareness and excitement for IZOD clothing titled "IZOD in the Snow". New York, New York (PRWEB) November 19, 2006 -- Ben Orisich, Creative Director at SoHo New York-based design and production studio, HomeNYC, directs his third commercial for IZOD, an adventure, lifestyle clothing brand. Mike Kelly and Orisich continue their successful relationship working on a series of lifestyle commercials for IZOD. Kelly chooses to work with HomeNYC because "[Ben is one member of a team [who has a very strong point of view…When he falls in love creatively, I don't think there's anything he can't do." While working on their previous commercial collaboration, IZOD in the Sun (http://www.homenyc.tv/HomeWork/Archive/Izod_In_The_Sun.html), Orisich and Kelly began brainstorming ideas for the winter 2006 tie-in, IZOD in the Snow (http://www.homenyc.tv/HomeWork/RecentWork/Izod_In_The_Snow.html).
"While working on IZOD in the Sun (http://www.homenyc.tv/HomeWork/Archive/Izod_In_The_Sun.html), we knew that there would have to be a winter tie in for it," says Orisich. "The goal that Kelly and I had for the tie-in was to create an IZOD fantasy world within a world." To Kelly, who already scheduled a still photo shoot for IZOD's winter collection in Iceland, it was natural to piggyback a small film crew onto the still shoot for the "in the snow" commercial.
When Orisich and Kelly flew to Iceland to scout the location, they realized the potential to shoot more elements than planned in pre-production because the location was spectacular beyond their expectations. Icelandic production company, BaseCamp Productions, and their producer, "Big G" helped the film crew capture the maximum amount of footage in the best locations. "Iceland was an ideal location to shoot for this commercial. Thanks to BaseCamp, we had access to hundreds of captivating sites to film the two adventure-seeking characters that represent the IZOD brand," Orisich comments.
Director of Photography, Pete (The Treat) Konczal, captured dramatic footage of the characters kayaking in a lake field with icebergs, golfing on a glacier, and other shots needed for their shot list during the 14 hours of available Icelandic light using the Arriflex 235 camera and Kodak 35MM film. Konczal and Orisich also shot supplemental time-lapse digital stills with Nikon Digital SLRs that were used during post production for the spot.
To begin the four-week post production process, Mark Tyler, HomeNYC's senior editor, crafted a 30-second story from the raw footage shot by Orisich and Konczal in Iceland and footage from IZOD in the Sun (http://www.homenyc.tv/HomeWork/Archive/Izod_In_The_Sun.html) that connects IZOD's summer wear to their winter collection while communicating the brand identity.
Orisich put in over 200 hours of Flame ® work, which included color correction, iceberg manipulation, hill and sky replacements throughout the spot, and the transition from the winter playground in Iceland to the tropical paradise of the Bahamas to create a seamless transition between IZOD's seasonal clothing lines.
HomeNYC's team of graphic artists, Lawrence Calderon, Patricia (Fred) Marinoff, and Steven Gifford, rotoscoped the project using Combustion®. Doug Johnson at Galaxy 61 created the computer generated (CG) "IZOD Island", the tropical paradise in which the two central characters play, and the snow globe that is revealed at the end of the commercial.
Infidel, Inc./Dragon Licks performed and licensed the song for the commercial, "Fix", which is listed as a top 10 track in SHOOT Magazine, while Yessian completed the sound design and the theatrical mix. Technicolor converted the digital files to film.
By placing tropical "IZOD Island" within a snow globe that the two central characters gaze into while relaxing in their winter playground, Orisich and Kelly achieved their goal to create a surreal, fantasy world within a world for IZOD clothing where winter is an extension of summer while associating the IZOD brand with adventure, fun and excitement.
The 30-second commercial debuted nationwide on October 27 in film theaters where it will run through November 30, 2006. It is also running on 11,000 digital movie screens, preceding PG-13 and R-rated films, through early January 2007.
