MINNEAPOLIS (PRWeb) February 3, 2007 -- Maya Angelou will speak to Capella University's master's and PhD students at the online university's upcoming residential colloquium in Atlanta as part of Capella's Distinguished Speakers Series. The event will take place in the Grand Ballroom of the Hilton Atlanta on Sunday, Feb. 4, at 8 p.m. Capella is an accredited, fully online university with more than 16,300 students, 85 percent of whom are pursuing a master's or PhD degree.
Angelou is one of the leading voices in contemporary black literature. Her best-known works include a series of books based on her own life, beginning with I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Many Americans first became acquainted with her through her poem "On the Pulse of Morning," a highlight of the 1993 presidential inaugural ceremony.
Each year, Capella hosts seven to eight colloquia at locations throughout the country, which require its master's and PhD online degree students to collaborate with their peers and faculty in workshops and presentations related to their areas of study. Capella's Distinguished Speakers Series began with an address by Ray Suarez of The NewsHour at the university's Dallas commencement ceremony in July 2005.
