Tattoo Pioneer Shanghai Kate Returns to SLC Tattoo Convention Third Annual SLC Tattoo Convention brings home Utah native Tattoo Artist/Authority Shanghai Kate Hellenbrand. Kate has been tattooing nearly 40 years, was born and raised in Salt Lake City and attended Granger High School. She has worked all over the US, and spent most of 1979 working throughout Europe as the first vagabond American tattoo artist. She is considered to be a pioneer in the world of female tattoo artists and is invited to attend all major tattoo conventions throughout the year.
"The Salt Lake show is one of my favorites," says Hellenbrand. "It's not only because I was born and raised here but because Utah is probably the most spectacularly gorgeous state in the country, filled with the nicest people. I simply love being in Utah." (She has Utah tattooed on the inside of her left wrist.)
Sailor Jerry is one of the most recognized names in tattooing as arguably the most important tattoo artist of the 20th Century and Hellenbrand is one of three people who studied with him in his later years. (Sailor Jerry died in 1973.) After his death, Hellenbrand purchased a portion of his estate and has now written or published three books about this legend. She will be signing her books at the SLC Convention.
"I love to talk about the man and my time with him," she says. "I know how incredibly lucky I am to have been with him at the beginning of my career."
While manager of NYC's Sacred Tattoo, Kate enjoyed working on many celebrities, including: Howard Stern, members of Pearl Jam, scores of other actors, musicians, models, "captains of industry." Her shop was eight blocks from the World Trade Center and she stood on her rooftop and witnessed the events of September 11, 2001. She was listed as one of the "Missing and Presumed Dead" - number 3,835. "The FBI was very happy to learn I was alive and well."
