Sensory Arts & Science Receives U.S. Patent 7,166,079 for MacScope

Company receives patent on early detection method for Age-related Macular Degeneration.

King of Prussia, PA (PRWeb) Feburary 1, 2007 -- Sensory Arts & Science today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued patent number 7,166,079 for its MacScope method and technology. The MacScope is a quick and effective screening method for identifying the presence of irregularities in the macular region of the eye.

The patent, entitled "Methods and Apparatus for Observing and Recording Irregularities of the Macula and Nearby Retinal Field", was issued on January 23, 2007. The patented method is the essence of the company's MacScope technology, which enables the user to quickly detect abnormalities such as Age-related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) in their own eyes. The MacScope is currently being tested in a multi-center clinical trial in the Philadelphia area in order to determine its sensitivity in detecting early stage ARMD. Further study will determine other types of pathology that may be detected with the MacScope, such as Diabetic Retinopathy.

The MacScope is a device or computer-based test that enables the patient to visualize irregularities in the macular region, the area of the eye that is responsible for sharpness of vision in the central visual field. ARMD affects more than 12 million people in U.S. alone and is the leading cause of functional blindness in the elder population. While there is currently no known cure for ARMD, several promising treatments are being developed and early detection has been shown to be a critical factor in halting or slowing the advance of the condition.
