Potential Technologies donates DVD burner to FreeBSD project

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, November 12, 2002 -- Potential Technologies has donated a DVD burner to Søren Schmidt, author and maintainer of the ATA code in the current release of FreeBSD, as well as the author of the burncd code for burning CDs.

"With the increase in the amount of data that people store over the last few years, it's important that administrators have the ability to make archival copies of large amounts of data," said Bill Moran, CEO of Potential Technologies. DVD recording media is available in many different formats, and the recording devices are different for each type of media. The resultant cost to develop drivers for all media types could be extremely high, since a developer needs to be able to test each one.

Recently, however, Sony introduced the DRU500A, which supports all available media types.

"We use FreeBSD for almost everything we do," Bill said, "and we saw this as an opportunity to give something back to the open source community, while helping ourselves as well. We've had customers ask about DVD support and we want to be able to tell them that FreeBSD can do that."

Potential Technologies is a software development and technical services company located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Potential Technologies is available for contract system administration in the Pittsburgh area, and for programming services nationwide.

Søren Schmidt is the author and maintainer of the ATA code in FreeBSD. He has been a member of the FreeBSD project for over 10 years and can be reached at sos@FreeBSD.org.
