Santa Letters Reach Children In Shelters Everywhere! Families hiding in shelters have very little but, this Christmas, they will not be forgotten! Portland, OR business owner donates free Santa letters to children living in shelters with their moms. Leaving an abusive relationship can be very hard on all those invovled. The children need some reassurance and Santa it the one to do it this winter. Portland business owner, Donna Satterlee, of Feel The Rainbow.com (http://feeltherainbow.com) has teamed up with Operation Not Alone (http://operationnotalone.org), this holiday season, to help deliver Santas letters to children in shelters, across the United States.
Operation Not Alone is a non-licensed organization, started by Jessica Patraw, designed to reach out and help mothers share the gift of Christmas with their children, while they re-build their lives; lives that involve freedom from abuse, neglect, and a life of fear. To help these mothers through this transition and the difficult holidays ahead, volunteers reach out to let them know they are not alone", by donating monies and items necessary to put together gift baskets, which are later distributed, to shelters.
According to the National Council on Child Abuse and Family Violence, More than 2.5 million reports of child abuse are made in the United States annually with hundreds of deaths related to child abuse reported each year." It is also estimated that there are 4 to 5 million women being abused, in their homes, and there is a woman or child being abused every 15 seconds. I was married for 9 years to a man who was very mentally, emotionally and verbally abusive. When my thirteen year old daughter recently announced that her father was doing the same to her, I knew it was time to take a stand," asserts Satterlee.
When Satterlee heard about Operation Not Alones program, she knew the gift baskets were a great idea! But, she also believed that the children, in these shelters, needed some form of re-assurance that Santa would not forget them, that their lives would have some ounce of normalcy, and that they had done nothing wrong.
I honestly believe there is no better way to offer this reassurance, than with the symbol of Santa Claus," says Satterlee. In a childs mind, Santa is the one who tells us if we are naughty or nice. If Santa forgets us at Christmas, we believe we have done something drastically wrong. But, if Santa sends a gift, we know that weve been good."
