This new resource links to many informational Websites, local support groups, downloadable brochures, and much more.

Many African American men are family caregivers as well, and renowned expert Merville C. Marshall, Jr. M.D., has written a column about how men can adjust to their new responsibilities:

February is also National Heart Health month, and, according to the National Institute on Health, the probability of dying from Coronary Heart Disease may be greater in black Americans than in white Americans. African Americans may also be at greater risk for hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). Strength for Caring offers resources, support, and information on stress-reduction, lifestyle changes, and more, to help reduce the risk of heart disease.

The risk of heart disease increases as we age, and is also associated with family history. High blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, cigarette smoking, diabetes, and lack of exercise often contribute to heart disease. Stress and caring for someone else can also increase your risk. According to Lynne Perry-Bottinger, M.D., F.A.C.C., “Note too that as the caregiver, you should take care of yourself as well, because caring for a spouse can increase your risk of developing and dying from heart disease.”

This month be sure to take care of your heart and be sure to celebrate African American history month. Visit www.StrengthforCaring.com for tips on reducing stress, having a heart-healthy day, caring for someone with heart disease finding African American caregiving and healthcare resources, and more.
