Originating over a century ago in Europe, International Women's Day (IWD) is the story of ordinary women as makers of history. It is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on equal footing with men. Women in the United States organized the first national Women's Day in 1908 to help inspire the international event, and WorldWIT is ensuring that the holiday continues to be recognized annually. Women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, can now come together to celebrate their Day and reflect on a tradition that represents ninety-nine years of struggle for equality, justice, peace, and development.
"The day, which has been sponsored by the U.N. since 1975, has been recognized as a time for asserting women's political and social rights, for reviewing the progress that women have made and simply as a day for celebrating women," says Liz Ryan, CEO and founder of WorldWIT. She adds, "Today, WorldWIT exists to connect these women around the globe, and the upcoming series of web seminar events brings to life what we achieve via email everyday in the WorldWIT community."
