Top Long Island, NY, High School Students Set to Compete in 11th Annual Rohm and Haas Electronic Materials Invitational Science Fair

For high school athletes, there are the playoffs. For academic all-stars from 10 Long Island, NY, high schools, there is the Rohm and Haas Electronic Materials Invitational Science Fair, which will held on April 22, 2007 at Great Neck South High School.

Freeport, NY (PRWeb) April 14, 2007 -- Nearly 300 top students from ten Long Island, N.Y., schools will test their scientific prowess and research skills at the 11th Annual Rohm and Haas Electronic Materials Invitational Science Fair on April 22, 2007, at Great Neck South High School, 341 Lakeville Road, Great Neck, NY.

Rohm and Haas Electronic Materials has sponsored the event every year since the science fair was started by science and research teachers from the participating high schools in 1996.

"We are honored to again support this wonderful event, which provides an opportunity for young people to share ideas, experience the thrill and challenge of scientific research and compete for scholarships and cash prizes," said Rohm and Haas Vice President David Schram.

The ten high schools participating in the fair are: Great Neck North, Great Neck South, Herricks, Jericho, Manhasset, Paul D. Schieber (Port Washington), Roslyn, Southside, Syosset and The Wheatley School. The event organizing committee, called the Research Association (www.researchassociation.org), is comprised of teachers from each of these schools and is responsible for all planning and implementation for the event.

Schram said he is continually impressed by the level of sophistication of the projects the students submit. Last year, for example, Mary Douglas, 17, and Alison Liu, 16, both from Manhasset High School, Manhasset, NY, won a fair award for their project titled "The Effects of CNS Stimulants and SSRIs on the Formation of Conditioned Long Term Memory and Learning Behaviors in Sleep Deprived Wildtype Drosophila melanogaster." The students later received a top team project award for their work from the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

The judges, many of whom are from local universities, hospitals and companies, volunteer their time to judge the students' projects and provide valuable mentoring.
