New novel, "Pike Place" by Marilyn Howard Tschudi, to be published on August 17, 2007. New York, NY (PRWEB) April 17, 2007 -- When the seven members of the young Johnson family wander into a new coffee bean shop with a naked-mermaid logo and a strange-sounding name, little do they know that Starbucks will someday become one of the world's biggest companies. The year is 1971, and Seattle's own musician, Jimi Hendrix, has just died from a drug overdose -- just months before the city's first Bumbershoot music festival ("Festival '71").

Written in the voice of a ten-year-old girl, Pike Place begins in the Eastern Washington town of Richland, home of the Hanford nuclear plant and the Manhattan Project. When the family moves into the "Seattle City Limits," the kids explore the city on foot and on their Honda mini bikes.

But then the unimaginable happens: one day, one of the Johnson children, 16-year-old Angela, disappears -- and magical play lands become forbidden woods, suspicion clouds every interaction, and even Pike Place Market itself stirs up feelings of uncertainty and fear.

Pike Place is a story of innocence and innocence lost. It is a quest for what was -- for closure, for reconciliation, for a return to a place that only exists in the memory.

ABOUT PIKE PLACE AUTHOR

Born and raised in the state of Washington, Marilyn has also lived in Cleveland, São Paulo (Brazil), New York and Raleigh -- where she lives today with her husband and three children. Marilyn is a graduate of New York's Barnard College and founder and president of Architexture Home Center, Inc., an award-winning home design and remodeling firm serving the cities around North Carolina's capital.

Marilyn's experiences include regional theatre, singing with the Cleveland Orchestra under conductor Loren Mazel; acting classes at Barnard College with guest teacher Christopher Reeve, (shortly after Superman II; mother of actress Nicki Tschudi (Young Necie, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood); former guest host for weekly classical music show on NYC station WKCR FM. City. Completed full ground-up restoration of historic building in downtown Apex, NC, one of the country's few remaining intact 19th century railroad towns.

Pike Place is Marilyn's debut novel. She is currently writing a new novel, "Tavern on the Green."

ABOUT PIKE PLACE COVER/DESIGN

The cover of Pike Place was created by Italian artist and performer Enrico Leoni. The original design and artwork features a 1970's postcard view of the famous "Public Market" sign in front of the Puget Sound. The cover will be familiar to Seattle residents and non-residents alike, as this view is prominent in scenes from films "Sleepless in Seattle" and "A Guy Thing," television shows "Grey's Anatomy" and "Frasier," and the famous work "Pike Place" by artist Thomas Kinkade.
