Biomass Gas & Electric Pioneers Renewable Energy Efforts In Georgia

Biomass Gas & Electric Company, LLC (BG&E), an Atlanta-based renewable energy company, has signed a pioneering power purchase agreement with Georgia Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company. BG&E will initially provide 25 megawatts (MW) of electricity produced in its environmentally friendly plant using advanced technology which converts a wide range of woody biomass and wood construction waste to electric power in an oxygen-free environment.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) April 23, 2007 -- Biomass Gas & Electric Company announces a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) recently signed with Georgia Power to provide the utility with electric power. A 25-megawatt renewable energy plant will be built next to a construction wood waste landfill in a suburb north of Atlanta.

The advanced technology BG&E is using follows a two-step process. First, biomass is superheated in an extremely low oxygen environment to produce a synthetic gas. Then this gas is used to produce steam to operate the power turbines in order to generate electricity. This highly efficient and extremely low-emission process offers a significant power production alternative that is both cost competitive and environmentally friendly.

The PPA between Georgia Power and BG&E is the result of a successful two-year collaborative effort between the two companies along with the assistance and guidance of the Georgia Public Service Commission and its staff.

"We must truly thank the commission, the commission staff and Georgia Power for the dedication and hard work that has led to this historic PPA. This PPA is the result of the newly approved and creative PPA process for renewable biomass electricity production. By using Georgia's significant biomass resources, many new jobs will be created in Georgia while providing an ultra clean additional source of energy for Georgia," said Glenn Farris, CEO of BG&E.

BG&E is a 6-year-old Atlanta-based company managed by some of the most experienced personnel in the country in biomass energy production. Key members of the BG&E team were directly responsible for setting up and running the first commercial scale advanced biomass gasification plant in the country.
