Devonian Stone of New York, Inc. Announces New Category of Stone Glacier Blue™ Devonian Sandstone is vastly different than what most refer to as bluestone, and company representatives are officially stating the differences between the two types of material. (PRWEB) May 4, 2007 -- Although Glacier Blue™ Devonian Sandstone has a beautiful pale blue hue, it is vastly different than what most refer to as bluestone, or common flagstone. Glacier Blue™ Devonian Sandstone is mined and manufactured by Devonian Stone of New York, Inc. in upstate New York, and company representatives are now officially stating the differences between the two types of material.
When the company was started over a decade ago, owner and President Robert Bellospirito originally began mining natural cleft bluestone, but he soon learned that if he pursued the stone deeper into the mountain, he would come up with a much higher quality material. This material is Glacier Blue™ Devonian Sandstone.
Dr. William Kelly of the New York State Geological Survey explains, "The strength, durability and weathering characteristics of any rock depend on its constituent minerals. Sandstones may not be subject to the same kind of deterioration as limestone. A quartz-rich, quartz-cemented sandstone found in the Catskills of New York, such as Glacier Blue™ Devonian Sandstone, is very durable. It is more difficult to scratch, has a higher compressive strength, and is much more resistant to erosion."
Found only in New York and Northeast Pennsylvania, Devonian sandstone offers an incredibly beautiful Glacier Blue™ color, unlike the gray, brown and green variations that exist in natural cleft stone, or common bluestone. Furthermore, unlike natural cleft stone which offers a size tolerance of +/- 1/4" at best, Devonian sandstone retains a high level of structural integrity providing cut tolerances of +/- 1/16" to the finished product, allowing it to meet the most demanding architectural specifications.
Architects and building industry professionals across the country are taking notice, and those who have chosen to work with Glacier Blue™ Devonian Sandstone say the differences are clear. Not only is it far more durable, but it is more consistent in color than other types of stone. One Los Angeles architect says, "We looked at various products, including European stones, limestone from Portugal, French material, and quite honestly there were issues with those materials in terms of the discoloration that could occur over time and holding up to weather. We wanted a durable material that had a high density and would hold up through the issues of heat and sun on the west coast, but also the traffic."
Glacier Blue™ Devonian Sandstone has been chosen for projects from New York to California, including the courtyard of The Dakota apartment building in New York City, numerous estates in Bel Air and Beverly Hills, California, The Smithsonian Institute, and many other residential, commercial, and institutional projects across the country.
Robert Bellospirito is a Registered Instructor with the award-winning AIA Continuing Education System and teaches architects about the qualities of New York sandstone as a building material. He states, "It gives me a chance to really show off the quality of this product that I work so hard to produce."
