Duquesne University's Department of Speech-Language Pathology Sets Digital Video Technology Standard in Graduate-Student Education With Landro Digital Playback System State-of-the-art Landro technology advances student education and training in clinical and classroom settings. Greensburg, PA (PRWEB) June 23, 2007 -- The Duquesne University Department of Speech-Language Pathology has introduced the Landro® play analyzer into its graduate program to support speech-behavior therapy with patients who suffer from speech deficits and to enable student counselors to learn appropriate counseling behaviors. The Landro® system enables student counselors in the graduate program to identify patient communication deficits, to determine how often patients' speech deficits occur, and to enable student counselors to develop appropriate behaviors during faculty supervised sessions with patients.
The Landro enables professors in the Department Speech-Language to respond more quickly and easily to students in the classroom than using traditional videotape. "When a student asks a question, I can get on the Landro and in a short time, we can look at the behaviors of different patients. All I need is six or seven seconds of video. I don't have to waste time fumbling with a videotape or a DVD to do that," said Mikael D.Z. Kimelman, Ph.D., CCC-SLP Department Chairperson and Associate Professor and Founding Chairperson and an Associate Professor in Duquesne University's Department of Speech-Language Pathology.
The Landro exemplifies the new way faculty members in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology access video to help teach, motivate and inspire program participants faster than previously possible with traditional methods. Clinical sessions are digitally recorded and cataloged or broken down.
The Speech-Language Pathology program at Duquesne University includes two either live or after a session by student clinicians or faculty for subsequent viewing and analysis. Students and supervisors study clinical techniques thematically rather than with the traditional linear method using videotape. separate, consecutive phases. The three-year Pre-professional Phase curriculum (six semesters) includes University core requirements plus coursework selected to provide students with a broad liberal arts education, a strong basis in the sciences, and critical thinking skills to allow the successful completion of the professional phase. In the two-year Professional Phase curriculum (six consecutive semesters, including two summers), Students focus on advanced, graduate-level education leading to acquire the specialized knowledge and skills required to become a nationally certified Speech-Language Pathologist.
