The Nation's First Jewish Religious Radio Station Goes on the Air in West Virginia
Benwood, WV -- January 06, 2003 - WVJW-FM on 94.1 made history when it signed on this week. Owned by Kol Ami Havurah, WVJW is the nation's first and only Jewish Religious Radio Station. WVJW is not only unique because it is primarily a Jewish station, but it is also a public radio station that can be enjoyed by the whole community.
Current broadcasts are a mix of programming and samples of what listeners will hear, as the station performs necessary tests. In a few weeks programming on WVJW will take two forms as a daytime service and as a nighttime service. Daytimes on the station are devoted primarily to Jewish Music, Local Weather, News from Israel, programming from the World Radio Network, and syndicated programs from other Public Radio stations. Nighttime takes on a different twist with a more secular service for the general public. Programming on the nighttime service is primarily programs with 80's Music, Disco, and Oldies from the 60's & 70's. Special World Radio Network programming will also air on Jewish Holidays.
Planning for the station began late in 1999 when the Federal Communications Commission authorized the opening of frequencies to local organizations. In June 2001 filing for frequencies in West Virginia began with Kol Ami Havurah as the second applicant in a short filing window. On July 30th 2002 Kol Ami Havurah was awarded the 94.1 frequency and quickly started construction.
The station, located in Kol Ami Havurah's offices just south of Wheeling, is an LPFM station. LPFM stations are small locally owned Non-Commercial Educational stations authorized by the Federal Communications Commission. WVJW's coverage area is approximately 7 miles, and serves the Wheeling, WV and Bellaire, OH areas. The station broadcasts from 9am to 10pm everyday.
