Somerville, MA-- A train wreck separates three friends in the the Midwestern United States. From there, it's all in their heads.

Once their crazy train is off its rails, unconscious meanderings seem to be the prevalent mode of transport for three friends named David, the three protagonists in Joseph Sullivan's first novel, Three Thirds.

"The characters live very much in their own heads. And that seems to be where a lot of the action is," Sullivan says.

It's true, most of the novel focuses on the inner workings of the three Davids. But a vast stable of characters seem to dance in and out of the plot around them.

"The other characters serve to ground the Davids in reality, which gets harder for them to grasp as the novel progresses," Sullivan says. "In particular, it's the shy redhead in the city, and the drummer in the college town."

The novel begins when a tornado hits their train on its return from Los Angeles. The third member of their group is left behind, injured, while the other two go their separate ways.

One of the Davids finds himself working a corporate job in an unspecified eastern U.S. city. He falls in love, loses love in several of his relationships and seems felled by mysterious dreams and headaches. He's not coping well with his new life, and he's looking for a remedy.

The other David returns to his old college town in the country, where he is looking for an artistic ideal. He tries to find it with various women, while also playing in a rock band. But he, too, has trouble adapting.

The third, meanwhile, seeks a reunion with his two friends, but can't seem to get to them immediately. Throughout the novel, his thoughts and feelings reveal his innermost workings and an overall need to find peace and share it with the other two.

"The book is really about the third's search. He's the strongest of the three, and he seems to know what all of them need . . . he seems to know their paths to happiness. He wants to teach them." Sullivan says. "At the same time, the third doesn't have that grounding the other two seem to get from the characters they encounter."

As the third's search progresses, he tunes in to the inner workings of his two friends in an almost mystical manner. In truth, he comes close to providing them with what they need. But whether or not he truly finds them happiness is ultimately left to the reader to decide.
