Leading Researchers Converge in San Francisco on Nov. 9 & 10 to Shine Spotlight, Create Solutions on Lung Cancer, the #1 Cancer Killer

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) November 5, 2007 -- Michael Milken, chairman of the Milken Institute and of Faster Cures, and the man Fortune magazine said "changed medicine," will be the keynote speaker for The Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation's Summit on Lung Cancer, which features the world's leading researchers, November 9 and 10, 2007 at the University of California San Francisco at the Mission Bay Conference Center. (Day One: 7:30am-4:00pm, Day Two: 8:30am - 12pm) Michael Milken will be speaking on Friday morning from 8:15-9:45am. The Summit is by invitation only. Facilitated by Carol Lin, former CNN Anchor and current CNN and NPR contributor, and Founder of the Cancer Social Network, this first-ever two-day Summit brings researchers, physicians, scientists, and lung cancer survivors from all over the globe and under the same roof to collaborate and define comprehensive solutions to eradicate lung cancer, the number one cancer killer.

• 650,000 people will die by the year 2010 of lung cancer in the U.S alone

• 14,000 in California alone will die next year

• An estimated 174,000 cases will occur in the United States this year. That means 450 people will die each day of lung cancer - 19 people each hour.

• 1.25 million new cases are diagnosed each year worldwide

• Lung Cancer remains dangerously under-researched and under-funded.

Lung cancer survivor and BJALCF Founder, Bonnie Addario says, "We can't afford to wait any longer for people to start paying attention to this deadliest of cancers which is why we are bringing together these leading experts with one goal in mind: To eradicate lung cancer. The Summit for Survival coincides with the second annual "Simply the Best" dinner gala at the Fairmont Hotel on the evening of November, 9, 2007, emcee'd by Cheryl Jennings. The evening will honor the work of Senators Dianne Feinstein and Chuck Hagel. Award presentations by Mayor Willie Brown and Wilkes Bashford. There will be a special tribute to Dana Reeve and her family. Dana Morosini, MD, Dana's sister, will be accepting the Dr. Fred Marcus SIMPLY THE BEST Award for her outstanding work as a BJALC Foundation Board Member in the fight to end lung cancer.

Fortune magazine lauded Michael Milken as a leading champion in medical advances. Milken--who also founded the Prostate Cancer Foundation, the world's largest source of support for prostate cancer research--will keynote and be followed by panelists of leading scientists, physicians and lung cancer researchers, government officials, survivors and patient advocates from points throughout the globe: Barcelona, Spain, Switzerland, France, Germany to New York City, California and around the world again. Co-chairs includes Dr. Claudia Henschke, MD, PhD, Professor of Radiology in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College; David M. Jablons, MD ,Co-Founder of the Foundation and Professor and Chief of Thoracic Surgery, Ada Distinguished Professor of Thoracic Oncology at UCSF, and Rafael Rosell, MD, PhD Chief Medical Oncology Service and Scientific Director of Oncology Research at the Institut Catala d'Onocologia, Hospital Germans Trias I Pujol, Barcelona, Spain.

The Summit will consider answers to the question, "If money for research and development was not a barrier, and a true collaboration of academic medicine, entrepreneurial biotech and pharmaceutical companies could be achieved, what are the immediate next steps needed to reach a cure in the least amount of time and how much would it cost?

Participants will:

• Discuss and debate viewpoints and approaches to early detection, treatment, research, and ultimately a cure for lung cancer.

• Begin planning for a structured, actionable, consensus-driven collaboration among the stakeholders.

• Form an executive committee at the conclusion of the conference comprised of representatives from biotech, pharma, basic sciences and clinical sciences who will create a viable and fundable strategic business plan to accelerate treatments and develop a cure for lung cancer. Upon successful completion of the plan, the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation will commit to assemble a group of funders to underwrite this plan as expeditiously as possible.
