Kate Bingaman-Burt's Obsessive Consumption at Rare Device San Francisco

San Francisco design store and gallery, Rare Device, is proud to present Kate Bingaman-Burt's notorious continuing body of work: Obsessive Consumption. Burt's three-dimensional installation will occupy the gallery portion of the store and can be viewed from December 7, 2007 - January 20, 2008. A reception for the artist will be held Friday, December 7, from 6 - 10 p.m. Obsessive Consumption started in 2002 when Bingaman-Burt decided to photograph all of her purchases and, in turn, created a brand out of the process to package and promote. She is currently hand drawing all of her credit card statements until they are paid off. She also draws something she purchases each day along with making piles of work (zines, pillows, photographs, dresses, buttons, etc) that fit into the brand she's built which mocks her own relationship with her purchases.

Obsessive Consumption started in 2002 when Bingaman-Burt decided to photograph all of her purchases and, in turn, created a brand out of the process to package and promote. Bingaman-Burt is tremendously excited to be showing at Rare Device during the holidays: "I've never had a show coincide with the spending season and I'm thrilled to be showing all of my original daily drawings (almost 600!), along with piles of pillows, credit card statement drawings, gocco printed paper chains (along with traditional gocco prints!), embroidered dresses, consumption ornaments and a ton of daily purchase zines!"

Bingaman-Burt's work has received rave reviews, most recently at Jen Bekman gallery in New York. Says Bekman of Bingaman-Burt: "Kate's work, and her approach to its distribution, embodies a wide range of contemporary ethos and practices. She is incredibly versatile as a visual artist, employing drawing, typography, painting, photography, crafts and graphic design in service to a central theme. Using weblogs, Flickr and Etsy as a means for commerce and commentary, she participates cheerfully and critically in consumerism's new frontier."

Kate Bingaman-Burt is an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Mississippi State University. She also is the founding partner of the Public Design Center. Kate's work has been featured in The New York Times and in multiple magazines GOOD, Print, Adorn, Dwell and How among them. Her work has been published in books like Hand Job! A Catalog of Type, The Artist's Guide to Making Money, The Crafter Culture Handbook, and Becoming a Digital Designer.

Her website, Obsessive Consumption, has been a Yahoo! Pick of the Day and has been featured on numerous weblogs including Boing Boing, The Consumerist, Core77, Coudal Partners, Design Observer, Things Magazine, We Make Money Not Art and Unbeige.

Rare Device is a store and gallery that features functional experiments and original ideas in art, design, craft and fabrication.
