Men have biological clocks too.

Male fertility decreases with age.

Various studies now show a 20% decrease in semen volume in 50-year-old men compared with 30-year-olds. Sperm quality decreases too. Why this happens isnt clearly understood, but age-related decline in semen volume and male fertility may be caused by changes in the genital urinary tract or perhaps by free radical damage at the cellular level. Sperm needs a healthy environment in which to survive. A decline in semen volume makes it harder for them to get to where they are supposed to go.

If you have been delaying fatherhood, or are concerned about this effect of aging, the following may be of interest to you. You can reverse this effect of aging and increase semen volume and quality again.

Fertility clinics often recommend dietary supplements to optimize sperm quality, fertility health and semen volume. The key ingredients are Acetyl-L-Carnitine, Folic Acid, Vitamins C, B12 and E, Selenium, and Zinc.

Sperm are particularly susceptable to oxidative damage, and it has been noted that high levels of free radicals are present in around 40% of infertile men so it makes sense to take supplements that contain Vitamin C which is a powerful antioxidant. Vitamin C is also thought to be helpful because it has a role in reducing the process of sperm agglutination (clumping together). As sperm agglutinate a man can become less able to impregnate a woman.

Folic acid, along with Zinc improves the quality of sperm in men who have fertility problems, according to a study from the University Medical Center Nijmegen in the Netherlands because the two nutrients are part of gene function and because enzymes involved in testosterone synthesis also rely on zinc. Zinc is thought to extend the lifespan of ejaculated sperm because zinc is found at such high levels in the testes.

Selenium an essential trace element and an important anti-oxidant, is associated with the treatment and prevention of cancer and heart disease. According to a Scottish research trial, Selenium has been shown to be a particularly important nutrient in overcoming male infertility. In a doubleblind, placebo-controlled study, men who took a vitamin tablet containing Zinc and Selenium had as much as an 80% increase in sperm motility.

Vitamin B12 is another important ingredient. It has been suggested that a B12 deficiency could lead to reduced sperm counts and reduced sperm motility.

Researchers have found that Acetyl-L-Carnitine may be able to stimulate sperm motility in certain situations.

Vitamin E has long been known for its antioxidant effects on cell membranes. Recently there has been some data published about vitamin E and its effect on fertility enhancement where taking it improved sperm function.
