(PRWEB) December 4, 2007 -- A ceremonial groundbreaking on Saturday, Dec. 1, gave volunteer firefighters, Herculaneum, Mo., residents and Doe Run employees the opportunity to celebrate the future Herculaneum fire station, which will be funded by The Doe Run Company (http://www.doerun.com). Pictured are Chris Baker (Fireman), Gary Hughes (General Manager of Doe Run's Herculaneum Smelter), Bill Haggard (Herculaneum Fire Chief) and Kenneth Marler (Fireman).

Alongside Herculaneum Fire Chief Bill Haggard, Smelter General Manager Gary Hughes unveiled plans for the $750,000 station. “We at Doe Run are honored to have the opportunity to help create a state-of-the-art firehouse for the people who serve as Herculaneum volunteer firefighters,” Hughes said to the guests at the event. “It’s also fitting that we celebrate now. In this, our city’s Bicentennial Year, we are reflecting on the past, celebrating the present and preparing for the next 200 years.”

The 6,000-square-foot fire station will include five apparatus and equipment bays; training and conference rooms; weight training and shower facilities; separate communication and fire chief offices; expanded restroom facilities; and a bunk room.

The station will be located at 1200 Riverview Drive in Herculaneum, on property owned by The Doe Run Company. Once construction concludes this spring, Doe Run will lease the land and the building to the Herculaneum Fire Department.
