Yates created the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash which ran a total of 5 times between 1971 and 1979, to protest 55mph speed limit laws. This trans-continental race started in New York City and ended in Redondo Beach. The first Cannonball was won by Yates and his partner, Le Man and Formula One winning driver, Dan Gurney. "The Cannonball" spawned two Hollywood films and the opportunity for Yates to co-write the second installment of Smokey and the Bandit.

Yates' American Automotive Industry writing has been known to be controversial and unpopular during its time, but many of his thoughts and concerns have come to fruition proving his ability forsee industry and social trends.
