Single Chip Low-power Audio CODEC Integrates Key Features for Portable A/V Applications

New AKM Device targets PDA, cell phones, personal electronics.

(PRWEB) May 19, 2003

San Jose, California (PRWEB) May 19th, 2003 — Asahi Kasei Microsystems Semiconductor, Inc. (AKM), a leading supplier of audio ICs for professional and consumer markets today introduced the AK4537, a low power 16-bit stereo A/D and D/A converter with integrated stereo microphone, headphone and speaker amplifiers. This audio system on a chip is designed for portable consumer devices such as PDAs, cellular phones and digital still cameras.

The AK4537 Low-Power Audio CODEC offers a single-chip solution for full audio recording and playback functions. The stereo microphone circuit improves the recording quality of portable devices. The AK4537 is pin-compatible and register-compatible with AKM’s previous AK4534 low-power audio CODEC, providing both an easy upgrade option and product line differentiation from a single PCB.

Key features of the AK4537 are a built-in headphone amplifier with internal mute circuit that eliminates pop noises at power on and off. A 300 mW speaker amplifier improves power consumption and audio quality, while the internal PLL simplifies system design.

The AK4537 uses an enhanced low-power consumption circuit that reduces headphone amplifier operating current by 40 percent when compared with earlier AKM devices. A power management function controls each circuit block for extended battery life, and the AK4537 also includes both 4-wire and I2C interfaces. Other key features are a built-in Mic-AutoLevel circuit (ALC) for improved recording and voice recognition, a digital attenuator and beep inputs for interfacing to MP3 decoders and cell-phone semiconductors.

The AK4537 provides sampling rates from 8 to 48 kHz and an operating voltage of 2.4 to 3.6 V.

Price and Availability

Available in a leadless 52-pin QFN package, AK4537 engineering samples are available now. The part is priced at $7.74 in 1K quantities. Evaluation boards and samples are available now directly from AKM.
